Comets News · Girls Water Polo Team Remains Undefeated with State Tournament Set to Begin

The Varsity Polo team entered the week looking to extend its program best 13 game win streak to possibly 19 with 6 games contested. By Saturday evening the team had done just that with wins over 3 top 10 ranked teams.

Tuesday evening saw a win over area rival Mason 18-8.
On Thursday evening the team travelled west to Kentwood for a showdown with the Falcons of East Kentwood. After a slow start that saw the scored tied 5-5 at the half, the team kicked into gear to pull away to claim a 15-6 victory. The team was led by the stellar all around effort of sophomore Lola Mull who scored 5 goals to accompany her 3 assists & game high 10 steals. Senior captain Emma Cornell continued her exemplary season by scoring 4 goals and she was backed by a hat trick from fellow senior Amiya Harris. Rounding out the scoring with two goals was junior Isabel Lee & sophomore Grace Weston who scored 1 goal each. Senior Emily Glasgow & junior Morgan Moore were steady in cage as they combined for 3 saves in the game.
On Friday the team made the journey west again this time to take on the #2 ranked Rockford Rams in the first game of the Rockford Varsity Invitational. It was a hotly contested game that wasn’t in hand until the final buzzer sounded but the Comets were able to notch their first ever win over a top 2 state ranked team with a 9-8 win over the hosting Rams. Emma Cornell was dominant as she recorded 5 goals while Lola Mull scored 2 goals to go along with 12 steals & 2 assists. Isabel Lee & Grace Weston rounded out the scoring with one goal each with Lee registering 3 assists as well. Goalie Morgan Moore made 5 saves for the team between the posts.
Saturday saw the team take the pool again this time for 3 games to finish out the Rockford Tournament. First the Comets locked in against the Pioneers from East Grand Rapids to take the 7-2 win. Morgan Moore & Grace West combined to allow just two goals for the game with Moore making 3 saves. Lola Mull led the team with 3 goals, while Isabel Lee chipped in 2 goals as well. Harris & Cornell each scored one goal to complete the scoring.
Game 3 of the tournament saw a rematch between the Comets and the River Rats from Ann Arbor Huron with the Comets winning the first game they played in April, 8-6. This time the #6 ranked Rats jumped out to a 1-5 lead and led the game at the halftime break 3-6. After the halftime break it was all Comets as the team won the 2nd half 7-0 behind stellar defensive execution to claim the 10-6 victory. Cornell & Lee led the team in scoring with 4 goals each while Harris tallied 1 goal & junior Anah Stahelin scored one as well. Morgan Moore made 5 saves in goal as she shut down the Rats in the 2nd half.
The 4th & final game of the weekend came in the form of a 7-4 win over the #8 ranked Ann Arbor Pioneer team. Cornell again led the way in the scoring column as she scored 5 of the teams 7 goals. Lola Mull & Isabel Lee each chipped in one goal to complete the scoring for the weekend. Lee also logged 3 assists. Morgan Moore made 4 saves from her goalie position.
The team record has now improved to a program best 19-0 and a top 5 state ranking for the first time in school history. Next up the team plays host to the #7 ranked West Ottawa Panthers on Tuesday evening at Grand Ledge Natatorium as we honor the seniors in the last home game of the season. This weekend at Mason High School the team will kick off post season play with an opening round game vs Troy at 4pm on Friday.
