Comets News · Comet Soccer Opens Season with Win over Eaton Rapids; DeWitt travels to GL Today

The Comets opened their season on a cold and slightly rainy night against Eaton Rapids at the GL Community Stadium on March 27th.

Early offense led by a duo of seniors set the tone for the match.  Senior Melanie Srouji scored only 19 seconds into the game when she was able to beat her defender to get a touch on a cross from sophomore Avery Seling.  Less than 2 minutes later, Mel was able to double the lead as she finished the cross from junior Sydney Deal.
Mel was able to complete her hat-trick in the 16th minute as she took advantage of an Eaton Rapids give away by floating a shot over the Eaton Rapids goalkeeper.  The hot start to the game continued as Mel scored her 4th goal of the game in the 18th minute as she was put on a breakaway by sophomore Kelly Siwek.
The Comets did concede a goal late in the first half, but entered halftime leading 4-1.
Senior Hannah deSilva then got into the scoring act.  Junior Hannah Spindler was able to hit a cross to the top of the box that was settled by Avery Seling.  Avery laid a pass off to Hannan deSilva who calmly placed her shot past the goalkeeper to give the Comets a 5-1 lead.
Melanie then became provider as she slotted a pass to the right side of the box for sophomore Kelly Siwek.  Kelly hit her first time shot with power at the near post to score her first of the year.
Hannah deSilva completed the scoring after she received a pass at midfield from junior Joey Davidson.  Hannah dribbled up the field without any defenders stepping to her so she took a long range shot that found the back of the net.
The Comets won the game 7-1 with freshman Emily Cook and sophomore Marie Poulin sharing the victory in goal.
