The Grand Ledge Varsity girls basketball team is hoping to make it six straight wins tonight as they hit the road for a MHSAA District Semi-Final game tonight at Owosso High School against East Lansing.
The Comets advanced to face Trojans after defeating Owosso Monday night in an opening round contest.
Grand Ledge got out in front early with a 15-4 scoring edge in the opening quarter and led 28-12 at the half. The tough defense continued in the second half as the Comets raced to a 56-34 victory over the host Trojans.
Makenzie Todd led the way with a great all around game, scoring 19 points to go with four assists and four steals. Courtney Sharland added 11 points and 12 rebounds to go with five huge blocks. Maddie McKinley and Lauren Edlin each had six points.
The victory came after four consecutive wins to close the season by Grand Ledge, including a huge senior night win over Holt at home last Friday.
The winning streak started against Lansing Eastern with a 76-50 win on the road. Todd scored 21 points including three shots from downtown while Sharland added 15 points and eight rebounds. Tilly Guild had seven points and six rebounds and McKinley added 10 points and four assists. Edlin had five points, seven rebounds and four steals.
The following night in a make up game at Jackson Grand Ledge avenged an earlier loss to the Vikings with a 66-38 win. Todd led with 24 points and four triples while Sharland had 12 points, 10 boards and four blocks. Celia Risdale scored nine and Edline added eight with five rebounds.
The Comets then handled Sexton at home the following Tuesday 66-23 behind 15 points from Risdale including three shots from long distance. Todd added 13 points and six assists.
Grand Ledge will tip off tonight at Owosso High School at 7:30 p.m. against East Lansing, hoping to make it six straight wins and a trip to the district title game Friday night.
