The Grand Ledge varsity wrestling team capped a perfect CAAC Blue season Wednesday night, defeating Holt on the road 42-20. Grand Ledge will look to win its fourth straight CAAC Blue title when they travel to Jackson on Saturday, February 3rd.
“I was very happy for our guys last night and for the team,” coach Steve Delaney said. “They have worked Hard this year being crowned Dual Season Conference champs is something this group has earned and deserves.”
Grand Ledge Sophomore sensation and returning All-State wrestler Andrew Hughes got visitors started with a pin in the lower weights while the Comet bigs sealed the deal with Arnouts, Aguilar, and Riggs all getting pins to finish off the dual and seal a 42-20 win over rival Holt.
Tommy Lear at 125 had a big win by win while four other teammates Alex Kingsley, Ian Beebe, Karson Kost and James Sharpe all posted key wins by decision. Sharpe who improved to 25-1 with a thrilling victory late in the match.
“It was an overall team effort even in the matches we lost we didn’t give up the big bonus point,” head coach Steve Delaney said. “This was by far one of our all around best team efforts of the season.”
In order to be outright champs Grand Ledge will need to win the CAAC Blue tournament this weekend at Jackson High.
“We still have some work to do but are ready for the challenge,” coach Steve Delaney said. “I am really happy for this senior class because they have become the most successful senior class when it comes to the CAAC Blue conference in school history.”
Over the past four years the current GL seniors have an incredible 27-1 record conference dual matches.
Wrestling on Saturday will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Jackson High before the Comets turn their sights to the MHSAA tournament and the team district will be at GLHS on February 7th.
