Comets News · Comets Beat Rams to Stay Atop the CAAC Blue Standings

The Grand ledge boys varsity took a 58-41 win over rival Holt rams on Friday night at Holt High School to remain tied for first place in the CAAC Blue. The Comets sit atop the league standings after finishing the first half of league play with a 6-1 record, tied with the Okemos Chiefs.

“Great memory for our seniors. This is the last time they will travel to their rivals gym and play. To leave there with a win is special,” coach Scott Lewis said.

Starting off the first quarter the GL offense got it done with 12 points. Al McCready scored 6 in the opening frame while teammate Javel Lewis added four and Grant Gardella  2 off an offensive rebound. But it didn’t stop there, GLs locked in defense held Holt to only 4 points in the first quarter.

Both teams scored eight points in the second stanza and the Comets led by eight at the halftime break. Grand Ledge had a pair of threes along with a paint score by Al McCready. Holt scored most of there points in the second quarter on the free throw line and in the paint.

Both teams proved evenly matched in the third quarter, scoring 13 points apiece.  The intensity started to pick up with Jarred Houghton and Steph Hall both had triples, along with a Jayke Hougtons inside score. Holt again got most of their points inside the paint as GL was trying to find a way to stop that.

“Our guys played really well as a team. We played 3 quarters of good basketball, so there is still room for improvement,” Coach Lewis said.

Grand Ledge put up 25 points in the 4th quarter to put the game away, outscoring the Rams by 9 in the final period. Luke Smith had a pair of threes along with Jayke Houghton’s driving bucket in the paint. Great defense and a team effort sealed the deal.

“When it is GL vs Holt it is about heart, grit and grinding it out and I thought our guys did well in those categorizes,” Lewis said. “We got stops when we needed them, converted baskets when we needed to, rebounded well, and we didn’t get rattled when holt made a run. Proud of our team all 16 guys contributed.”

GL boys varsity is now 9-1 ending the half way point of the season with a on the road game against Everett on Friday!
