The Comet varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season after a big 55-42 non-leuage win on the road at Waverly High School on December 12th.
Makenzie Todd came up huge for GL, exploding for 25 points to go with 4 assists, four rebounds and two steals. Maddie McKinley added 10 points and Lauren Edlin grabbed five big rebounds to go with eight points. Courtney Sharland added seven boards and was a force defensively in the paint.
The game was tight throughout the first half with the teams tied 12-12 after one quarter before GL headed into the halftime locker room ahead 23-21. Coach Beth Perez had the girls ready in the third quarter as the Comets 0utscored the Warriors 16-6 to open a 13 point lead.
“The girls came out hard again in the 3rd quarter to open the lead a bit more and never let it get closer than 10 points the rest of the way,” coach Perez said. “I think the girls did a good job switching in and out of defenses and getting scrappy for rebounds in the second half. I believe that is what made the difference in the end.”
Grand Ledge out rebounded the Warriors by a 36-23 margin.
Grand Ledge will be back in CAAC Blue play with a huge game at Okmeos on Friday, December 15th before returning home to play Charlotte on Tuesday, December 19th.
