The Grand Ledge JV girls team began their 2017-2018 season by playing host to the visiting Raiders of Portland. It was Freshman Megan Willoughby’s nine early points leading the Lady Comets to a 12-8 advantage after the first quarter. The Lady Comets took a 20-9 lead into the half after holding the Raiders to one second quarter point.
The Lady Comets pushed the lead to 25-13 after three quarters. “We had a tough time putting the ball in the basket in the third quarter, but we did play pretty solid defense which I was happy with,” Comet coach Josh Charter said.
Late in the 4th the Lady Comets defensive pressure started to show life and the was able to cause Portland to commit numerous turnovers. “We really started to make Portland uncomfortable with our traps and anticipation. I would like to see us get so more scoring out of our defense but that is something we can correct with time,” explained Coach Charter.
The Lady Comets were led in scoring by Willoughby with 11 and Maddy Meredith with seven points. Ashton Fuentes and Liz Lopez both had four points on the night.
