The 2017 Varsity Swimming & Diving team’s record setting season concluded on Saturday at Oakland University with a program best 13th place finish at the MHSAA Division 1 State Championships. The group consisted of sophomores Lola Mull, Grace Weston & Danielle Ries, junior Abby Ford & seniors Amiya Harris & Emma Cornell.
Leading the way was sophomore Lola Mull as she shattered the all time Michigan High School state record in the 500 Freestyle set in 2007 by 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Allison Schmitt. Schmitt’s time was 4:47.46 while Lola registered a new standard of 4:44.47 and captured her first individual MHSAA State Title along the way and claimed Automatic All America honors.
Lola also competed in the 200 Freestyle where she swam to a runner up finish with a new best time & All America consideration time of 1:49.33. Her 200 Freestyle time ranks her 14th in Michigan history in that event.
Fellow sophomore Grace Weston had the best meet of her young career as she placed 8th in the 100 Breaststroke & 16th in the 200 Individual Medley. Her time in the 100 Breaststroke of 1:05.70 was good enough to claim All State honors & registered as the 5th fastest in Lansing area history & a new Grand Ledge School record. Her time in the 200 IM of 2:08.93 was good enough for 6th all time in Lansing area history & a new Grand Ledge School record.
Saginaw Valley State bound senior captain Emma Cornell concluded her career with the Comets with a pair of individual best times in both the 100 Freestyle & 100 Breaststroke. Emma placed 24th in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 53.95 & placed 19th in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:07.43.
Fellow senior captain Amiya Harris closed out her senior season by claiming 36th in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:09.39. Amiya finishes her career with the 5th fastest time in school history in the 100 Breaststroke & Top 15 swims in both the 200 IM & 100 Butterfly.
Junior Abby Ford had a fantastic showing as she registered a new lifetime best in the 100 Breaststroke of 1:07.58 to place 20th. She also registered lifetime best times on both Freestyle relays.
In relay action the team was able to score their first ever relays at the Division 1 State Meet. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Weston, Cornell, Ford & Mull swam to a 12th place finish and a new school record time of 1:38.41.
The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Cornell, Ford, Weston & Mull finished in 10th place with a time of 3:34.03.
