Boys Junior Varsity Soccer, Boys Varsity Soccer · Comet Soccer Erupts for Five Goals in Victory over Jackson

Coming off their first win of the year, the Comets felt confident heading into a tough league match against Jackson.

Early on, both teams were full of ambition as they each created scoring opportunities.  In the 10th minute of the game, a miscommunication by the Comets defense gave the opportunity for a mini breakaway by the Jackson forward.  Though Aric Phinney (’18) and Nate Jefferson (’19) were recovering, Matthew LeBlanc (’21) came out strong and thwarted the Jackson effort.
Both teams continued to push forwards for a goal, but the defenses and goalkeepers were up to the task.  However, in the 36th minute, Aric Phinney changed the dynamics of the game with a stunning free kick.  From 42 yards out, Aric smashed a laser of a free kick that knuckled and swerved before it hit the side netting to give the Comets the lead.
Jackson, however, was up to the task as they answered immediately with an equalizer.  The momentum had shifted and Jackson was able to scored a second goal off a corner kick right before the halftime whistle.
5 minutes into the second half, Matthew LeBlanc again was called into action as he made a diving save on a free kick.
In the 51st minute, the Comets were able to combine down the left side of the field before Nick Battley (’18) was able to switch the play to Eric Brand (’18).  Eric’s cross was beautifully served behind the back line and forced the Jackson goalkeeper to punch it away.  The ball then landed at the feet of Hudson Morgan (’18) who saw his shot squeak past the Jackson defense to tie the game at 2-2.
In the 57th minute a Cody Keitchen (’18) corner kick went past the far post where Hudson Morgan was able to lay back a pass to Matt Jackson (’19) who finished his first time effort to give the Comets the lead.
The momentum had shifted and the Comets’ offense took advantage.  In the 69th minute another Cody Keitchen corner kick was pushed out by the Jackson goalkeeper, but Jim Werner (’18) finished it.  With only 2 minutes remaining in the game, a Cody Keitchen free kick was served into the box where Hudson Morgan was able to head it home for his second goal of the game.
The Comets won the game 5-2 and improved to 1-0-1 in CAAC Blue play.
