Comets News · Comet Swim Team Wins Allegan Invitational

The Comet Swim team travelled to southwest Michigan to take on 8 teams at the 2nd annual Allegan ‘Swim Your Year’ Invitational and walked away with the overall title edging  runner up Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 409-372.5. This meet pit all grade levels against each other in a class vs class battle that saw points scored by any swim inside the top 8 swimmers of each event.

The team received major contributions from a variety of sources on Saturday. Sophomore Lauren Phillips placed 4th in the 100 Breaststroke & placed 8th in the 100 Freestyle. Freshman Olivia Vanderlaan took home 1st place in the freshman division of the 100 Freestyle & placed 3rd in the 100 Backstroke. Fellow freshmen Nicole Stensen claimed 1st in both the 200 Freestyle & 500 Freestyle & Amelia Hofmeister broke through with a best time & 2nd place finish in the 50 Freestyle.

Isabel Lee captured 1st place in the junior flight of the 100 Backstroke & Amiya Harris captured the senior flight of both the 200 IM & 100 Breaststroke. Sophomore Lola Mull set a new school record & made a Division 1 state cut in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.46 & captured 1st in the 100 Backstroke with a new best time of 1:01.42. Junior Abby Ford captured her flight in the 100 Breaststroke & senior Emma Cornell snagged wins in both the 100 & 50 Freestyle. Sophomore Grace Weston also grabbed a pair of victories in the 200 Freestyle & 100 Butterfly.

Sophomore Dani Ries had a strong showing as she placed 2nd in the 50 Freestyle & showed her versatility as she won the sophomore flight of the 500 Freestyle in 5:46.34.  Fellow sophomore Sam Usher had a strong day in the sprints as she placed 3rd in the 50 & 100 Freestyle. Finally, senior Vic Judd claimed 5th place finishes in both the 200 & 500 Freestyle.

The team next hosts Charlotte & Mason on Tuesday evening at 6pm at GLHS as the 2017 home schedule kicks off with this three team out of conference clash.
