The Grand Ledge boys’ varsity soccer team traveled to Haslett for their final match before the CAAC Blue schedule takes full flight. Last year, the 2 teams battled to a 0-0 draw.
Though the Comets were able to establish early possession, the Vikings were able to pounce on a turnover and hit a long ball that Andy Vahng was able to smash past freshman goalkeeper Matthew LeBlanc.
The Comets continued to keep possession through the midfield and worked the ball from side-to-side with seniors Nick Battley and Hudson Morgan anchoring the attack. However, late in first half, Haslett was again able to turn a Comet mistake into a goal. After a long ball, the Vikings eventually hit a cross from the right side that Griffin Doran was able to tap in at the far post.
The Comets had a few free kick opportunities that posed all kinds of problems for the Viking’s defense. Senior center back Aric Phinney launched himself at a ball, but he just missed the cross. Senior Jim Werner saw his tap-in effort thwarted by the Haslett goalkeeper after a cross from Hudson Morgan following a corner kick.
Haslett added a 3rd goal by Carson Shadaker midway through the 2nd half.
The Comets were able to pull one back late when Sophomore Cameron DeLong found a running Jim Werner. Jim’s off-foot shot floated high and past the Haslett goalkeeper.
The final score was Haslett 3-1 over Grand Ledge.
