The 2017 version of the Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving team has big shoes to fill after last season’s CAAC Blue Championship. The team of sophomore Lola Mull, junior Abby Ford, senior captain Emma Cornell & sophomore Grace Weston combined to set the tone for the meet as they raced to a nearly 32 second win in the 400 IM Relay & lowered the meet record set in 2010 by one second to 4:12.10. Next up the 200 Medley Relay team of junior Isabel Lee, senior captain Amiya Harris, sophomore Danielle Ries & sophomore Chloe Willobee raced to a 4th place finish in a time of 2:04.03.
The second win of the evening came in the form of the 400 Free Relay as the team of Mull, Ries, Willobee & freshman Nicole Stensen raced out to a big early lead and never looked back en route to a win by 6 seconds in 3:55.14. Next the butterflyers took their turn as the team of Harris, sophomore Andrea Mueller-Hayes, senior Iida Kunnari & sophomore Anah Stahelin placed 5th with a time of 2:07.30 in the 200 Buttefly Relay.
The 500 Crescendo Relay was up next and the Comets did not disappoint as the team of sophomore Sam Usher, Stensen, Willobee & Mull raced a to a convincing 16 second win in a time of 5:02.58.
The 200 Backstroke Relay & 200 Freestyle Relays saw a pair of bronze medal finishes for the team. The 200 Back team of Lee, Mueller-Hayes, Stensen & Weston claimed their third place with a time of 2:03.68 & the team of Ries, Lee, Ford & Cornell placed third with a time of 1:46.61.
To cap off the evening the 200 Breaststroke Relay team of Ford, Cornell, Harris & Weston swam to a new meet record time of 2:09.33 lowering the existing record set in 2014 by over 2 seconds.
It was a strong start to the young season but also a positive note moving forward as the team looks to repeat as CAAC Blue Champs this season. The team is back in action on September 5th for a CAAC showdown with the St Johns Red Wings.
