After an entertaining opening round match against Williamston on Tuesday resulted in the Comets advancing by penalty kick shootout, Grand Ledge met Okemos in the Gold Cup SemiFinals on Thursday, May 18th.
The game with the Chiefs was a rematch of the top two teams in the CAAC Blue. Okemos finished the Blue season undefeated while Grand Ledge suffered their lone league defeat against the Chiefs.
The wind played a major factor in Thursday’s game and both teams struggled to gain an advantage early. However, the Chieftains started to gain a grasp on the game and applied a lot of pressure to the Comet defense. Jordan Skutar (’17) continued her strong season in net as she was called upon to make a few key saves. The game went to halftime tied 0-0.
Midway through the 2nd half, the Chieftains finally broke the deadline and scored. A few changes to the lineup helped to give the Comets a little more offense but they were still defending more than they preferred. Okemos hit the post twice in the second half.
With 5 minutes left in the game, Sadie Pettinger (’17) found herself with a little room at the top of the box and she fired home the equalizer.
Per CAAC Cup rules, the game went straight to penalty kicks after regulation ended 1-1.
The Comet shot first and Miranda Gale (’17) calmly converted. Jordan Skutar then made a spectacular save to her left to give the Comets the edge after the first round.
The Comets then turned to freshman Avery Seling who was very composed and scored her effort. The Chieftains matched even though Jordan nearly saved it.
The third kicker for Grand Ledge was Hannah DeSilva and she also converted her effort. The Chieftains third kicker hit the post to give the Comets the opportunity to win the shootout.
Sophomore Cassidy Pettinger stepped up and buried her effort to give the Comets a 4-1 penalty kick shootout victory.
The Comets now advance to play DeWitt in the Gold Cup Final on Tuesday, May 23 at 7pm at Lansing Catholic High School.
