The Grand Ledge Junior Varsity girls basketball team defeated Okemos in a CAAC Blue conference matchup Thursday night 65-29.
The Lady Comets got off to a fast start thanks to their aggressive defensive play, a fast moving offensive attack, and excellent teamwork. Grand Ledge scored 23 and 20 points in the first and second quarters respectively, giving them a 43-8 half-time advantage.
The second half was played fairly even, as the Lady Comets outscored the Lady Chiefs by one point in the final two quarters. A balanced offensive attack was the story for Grand Ledge, as every member of the team scored, including three players who reached double digits.
Freshman Riley Merryfield’s 14 points led the visitors in scoring while freshman teammate Desiree Jacobson contributed 10 points, 5 steals, and 4 assists. Sophomore Macie Hefron added 10 points and 3 rebounds in the effort.
“I was very pleased with the team’s aggressive play tonight,” coach Ara Parseghian said. “Our girls were very unselfish, sharing the ball and actively trying to get everybody opportunities to contribute. The first half tonight was probably the best half of basketball we’ve played all season.”
The JV Lady Comets are back in action at home on Thursday, February 9th for another CAAC Blue matchup against Jackson.
