The 2017 Hayes 8th Grade Lady Comets basketball season is under way with the two teams combining for a 5-1 record early in the campaign.
The B team currently sits at 3-0 with dominating wins over Holt (38 to 5), Ionia (48 to 6), and most recently against Dewitt (42 to 6).
“The girls played hard the entire game,” said coach Josh Charter. “We shared the ball well and ran the floor great. We’ve got a team full of hard workers on the defensive side and we create a lot of turnovers which leads to easy buckets in transition. This team is deep and we always have someone new stepping up and leading the team in rebounding and scoring”.
The A team is 2-1 with good wins against Holt (49 to 45) and Ionia (50 to 21) and a recent loss by six to Dewitt (27-21). “We started off slow tonight but fought back early in the 3rd quarter to get back in the game,” Charter said. “We played a little tight in the 4th quarter. We got within one point a couple of times but just couldn’t hit a shot to take the lead. We’ve got a great group of girls who work hard and they will bounce back from this loss. We get another crack at Dewitt in mid-February.”
Like the B team, the A team has great scorers, rebounders, and defenders. Anyone on this team is capable of putting up big numbers on any given night.
The Lady Comets are back in action Monday night at Waverly Middle School against the Warriors. Tip off for the B game is set for 4:30 p.m. Come out and support your 8th Grade Lady Comets basketball teams.
