The Grand Ledge varsity boys’ cross country team had two boys qualify for the state championship meet at the Michigan International Speedway. To qualify as an individual you must finish in the top 15 of the regional race, and to qualify as a team you have to finish as a top 3 team.
“Christian Hubaker and Tyler McCartney were our two qualifiers,” coach Anthony Machniak said. “Both are 4 year seniors and captains who have put in an enormous amount of work into their running careers.”
The Division I boys race was in the early afternoon. Due to the rain earlier in the week it was very muddy even though the sun was shining and it was around 60°F.
“Both McCartney and Hubaker ran smart races, but preexisting conditions caused it to pan out differently for them,” Machniak said.
McCartney had a breakout day and finished 5th in the entire state with a time of 15:53.
“Hubaker developed a stomach bug a day or two prior to the race and is still suffering from it,” Machniak said. “Despite feeling extremely ill during his race he still managed to finish 33rd with a time of 16:13, and missed the all-state cutoff by 2 seconds.
“While it hurts since Hubaker was all-state last year, his circumstances make his performance all the more impressive. Had he not been sick he would’ve been up there with McCartney in the top 10.”
Tyler’s capped his senior season and Comet cross country career with a thrilling race.
“McCartney had an outstanding day where he focused on his race,” Machniak said. “This allowed him to conserve his energy in the first mile and pass those who went out too fast. His confidence in his pace allowed him to finish extremely high in the state.”
Congratulations to Tyler and Christian on their performance at the state finals!
