The schedule lined up perfectly this season in the CAAC Blue as the undefeated Grand Ledge Comets squared off with the undefeated Rams from Holt in the final dual meet of the season for both teams. In a thrilling meet the Comets were able to surge ahead late and take the 95-91 victory over a tough Rams squad.
Record breaking freshman Lola Mull continued to impress as she broke her own pool record in the 500 Freestyle and was also victorious in the 200 Freestyle.
The meet got off to a very rocky start for the Comets as the team’s top 200 Medley Relay was disqualified and the Rams took advantage to jump out in front 2-12 after one event. In the 200 Freestyle senior captain Katie Thomas backed up Mull’s performance to slide in to complete a 1-2 finish. The duo of freshman Grace Weston & sophomore Abby Ford matched that feat as they were able to place 1st & 2nd as well to bring the score to 22-24 Rams thru 3 events.
The 50 Freestyle & Diving event both favored the visiting Rams by 6 & 4 points respectively and Holt carried a 33-45 advantage into the half way portion of the meet. Grand Ledge junior Emily Glasgow did provide a diving highlight as she was able to record a season best score of 132.35. In the 100 Butterfly the Comets were again outscored by the Rams this time by 6 points to stretch their lead to its largest of the evening, 38-56.
The Comets were finally able to reverse the meet starting with the 100 Freestyle. Junior Emma Cornell scored an upset victory with senior Alexis Everett & freshman Danielle Ries backing up her performance with 4th & 5th place performances as well. Following the 100 Freestyle the trio of Mull, Thomas & freshman Chloe Willobee teamed to place 1st, 2nd & 4th and cut the Ram lead in half from 16 to 8 at 59 to 67.
Next up was the ever important 200 Freestyle Relay. The team of Cornell, senior Meg Pope, Everett & Thomas secured a badly needed win while the team of senior Hanbyd Lee, sophomore Anah Stahelin, senior Cecilia Rivet & Williobee placed 3rd to add to the team’s point total. After the triumph in the 200 Freestyle Relay the score grew even closer, 69-71. The 100 Backstroke saw a strong counter punch by the Rams as they were able to squeak out a close win and back that up with a 4th & 5th place finish to extend their lead back to 4 points, 76-80.
The climax of the meet was provided in the last individual event of the evening by the trio of Pope, Ford & junior Amiya Harris with Harris turning in her finest performance of the season to take the victory in 1:12.79. Pope & Ford backed her up by placing 2nd & 3rd to complete the event sweep and give the Comets their first lead of the evening, 89-83.
The final event of the evening was the 400 Freestyle Relay and the Comets needed to secure 2nd & 3rd to capture the narrow win. The A team did their part as Cornell, Thomas, Weston & Ford placed 2nd in 3:51.55 & the B team of Willobee, Everett, Ries & Mull closed the meet out with a 3rd place time of 3:57.79.
This victory puts the final touches on an unblemished regular season for the Comets, their first since 2012. The win also captured the team’s first regular season CAAC Blue Championship since 2012 with a 7-0 record inside the league.
The team next heads to St Johns High School for the 2016 CAAC Blue Championship Meet from November 3-5.
