This week the CAAC Blue leading Grand Ledge Varsity Swimming & Diving team logged wins over the East Lansing Trojans & the Jackson Vikings. The week was finished up with a thrilling 2nd Place finish at the 20th Annual Muzz Relays at Saginaw Heritage High School.
First up the team travelled to East Lansing High School and received some great swims from a variety of sources in their 111-75 win. Sophomore Abby Ford led the way with event wins in both the 200 IM (2:22.74) & the 100 Backstroke (1:09.58). Freshman Chloe Willobee notched her first ever varsity win as she captured the 100 Freestyle with a lifetime best time of 1:00.21. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of freshman Grace Weston, Ford, seniors Alexis Everett & Cecilia Rivet swam to a win (4:11.38) to cap off the victory for the visiting Comets.
Next up the team hit the road again to take on the Jackson Vikings. In a closer than the score indicates meet the Comets were able to push their CAAC Blue record to 6-0 with a 114-69 victory. Freshman Grace Weston provided the top highlight of the meet as she swam to a win & a Jackson pool record time of 1:11.02 in the 100 Breaststroke. Senior captain Katie Thomas swam to two victories as she claimed the win in the both the 500 Freestyle & 100 Backstroke. Freshman Lola Mull & junior Emma Cornell both got in on the act as they claimed wins in the 200 Freestyle & 200 IM respectively.
The week was capped off with a record breaking performance by the team at the 20th Annual Muzz Relays at Saginaw Heritage High School. Though the team fell just short of the win they were able to claim three meet record breaking performances. First up the 800 Free Relay team of freshmen Grace Weston & Lola Mull & senior Katie Thomas eclipsed the previous meet record by over 15 seconds with a time of 8:20.53. Weston & Mull would return later to team with sophomore Abby Ford to set a new meet record in the 3 x 100 IM relay with a time of 3:15.45. The last record breaking performance occurred in the 300 Breaststroke Relay as the team of Weston, Ford, senior Meg Pope & junior Amiya Harris teamed to lower the existing meet record by nearly 3 seconds with a time of 3:34.21.
Some other highlights from the team’s strong performance came in the form of the team of sophomore Isabel Lee, junior Emma Cornell, freshman Lola Mull & freshman Chloe Willobee swimming to a tie for 2nd place in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 4:26.64. The 300 Backstroke Relay team of Isabel Lee, senior Cecilia Rivet, sophomore Andrea Mueller-Hayes & senior Alexis Everett combined to place 3rd with a time of 3:24.26. The 300 Butterfly Relay team of Thomas, Harris, Pope & senior Hanbyd Lee closed late in the race but came up just short of the win, finishing 2nd in 3:16.89. The meet was capped off with a 2nd place finish from the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Everett, Thomas, Cornell & sophomore Anah Stahelin in a final time of 1:50.85.
The team caps off the regular season on Thursday at home vs their fellow CAAC Blue unbeaten team, the Holt Rams. The winner of that meet on senior night will take home the CAAC regular season championship.
