Comets News · Grand Ledge Defeats DeWitt in Historic Football Battle

Grand Ledge notched their first win of the 2016 season, beating DeWitt 28-21 in a back and forth exciting game between the defending CAAC Blue and CAAC Red champs.

With the victory the Comets finish the non-league portion of their season with a 1-1 record heading into their CAAC Blue opener on Friday night against J.W. Sexton High School in Grand Ledge.

The visiting Panthers struck first to open up a 6-0 lead with a 38-yard scoring pass. The point after try was no good.

Football v DeWitt 13After a huge defensive stop inside the Comets 10-yard line the Grand Ledge offense struck quickly midway through the second quarter. Nolan Bird hit a streaking Zach Willoughby across the middle and the speedy junior receiver broke a tackle and kept his balance and raced 56 yards to the house. The Dillon Ross PAT put GL in front 7-6.

Grand Ledge extended its lead to 14-6 with an Antonio Rush 4-yard score early in the second half. DeWitt quickly answered with a 9-yard scoring run and converted the ensuing 2-point conversion to tie the score at 14.

The offensive fireworks continued as the Comets scored two plays later when Jacob Umholtz exploded through the line for a 29 yard scoring run and a 21-14 GL lead.

The Panther offense answered with a quick drive of their own, ending with a 28-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 21.

Grand Ledge closed out the wild third quarter with what proved to be the game winning score when Rush found paydirt from five yards out.

The Comet defense held strong in the fourth and final quarter, forcing the Panthers to turn the ball over on downs in the final minute to secure the win. Football v DeWitt Team Tackle

Rush led the Grand Ledge ground attack with 130 yards on 24 carries. Bird was 10 of 17 through the air for 180 yards and a touchdown. Four of the Bird passes went to Cal Johnston for a total of 60 receiving yards.

Cal Riggs had 8 solo tackles to pace the defense while Xavier Farr picked off three DeWitt passes.

Grand Ledge is back in action Friday at home against CAAC Blue rival Sexton starting at 7:00 p.m.
