The Grand Ledge Varsity and Middle School Squads brought home numerous trophies and awards from the Mid-American Pompon (MAPP) Summer Camp, held July 25 – 28, 2016 at Davenport University in Grand Rapids. The camp was attended by 12 teams from around the state, both advanced and intermediate levels. Camp focused on team unity, kick line skills, speed learning, and routine instruction, followed by nightly evaluations. At final evaluations both teams received several trophies and awards.
Varsity earned three trophies, including; 1st on their original routine, 1st on kick line, and a 2nd on speed learning. They also received the Most Congenial Award; an award voted on by all teams at the camp, for the friendliest and most supportive of other teams, staff and each other. “Camp is one of the events that our team looks forward to all year. It’s a fun and tiring week, but our team really worked hard, grew stronger, and performed beautifully,” said varsity Coach Patty Sanchez. “ I am so proud of our girls and can’t wait to see how they grow throughout the season.”
Middle School also earned three trophies, including; 1st on original routine, 2nd in kick line, and a 1st on speed learning. They also received the Peppy Pom Award; an award for the team that best keeps their energy and spirit up throughout the day. “Given this being the Middle School’s first year ever at camp, I am in awe of their performances…. they handled it like veterans,” says Middle School Coach Devon Dodge. “I am very proud of them and excited for what this season has in store.”
On the final day of camp Varsity Seniors perform a unique, themed, two minute routine requiring a minimum of 32 kicks, with costume changes and props. This year’s Grand Ledge High School seniors Hannah Bacon, Aliyah Clark, Katie Fallon, Kaylie Roberts, and Ally Young performed a Breakfast Club themed routine which they choreographed and perfected on their own.
MAPP Camp also provides Varsity campers the chance to try out for the MAPP All Star Team. This year Hannah Bacon, Aliyah Clark, Sierra DeRosia, Larissa Kilgore, Kaylie Roberts, and Devon Senczyszyn made the All Star Team. MAPP All Stars will have the opportunity to perform at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, along with the Thanksgiving Day Parade and St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Detroit.
