The Grand Ledge varsity girls golf team had a very impressive start to the 2016 season Thursday with a win at the Portland Invitational.
The Comets had solid performances led by Kaylee Hirschman’s 85 (2nd place individually) followed by a career best 89 by Aspen Locker (6th place individually). Lauran Mida contributed a fine 98 (10th place individually) but the story of the day for the Lady Comets had to be incoming freshman Vienne Sereseroz playing in her first career High School event firing a 94 (8th place individually) from the 6th spot to help Grand Ledge clinch the championship.
“Beating perennial girls golf power East Kentwood by two shots is a big deal as they have been to the state finals the last five years winning the D1 State Championship two years ago and beating us in the Regional by 5-7 shots last year,” Grand Ledge coach Jeff Miller said. “Also handling Dewitt by eight strokes is also a huge plus for our girls as Dewitt has traditionally had a very strong girls program.”
Those two things along with solid play from the other team members should help build some confidence for the CAAC Blue campaign which begin Tuesday at Jackson.
“A very nice beginning to what I think promises to be a very good season,” Miller said.
