Girls Varsity Water Polo · Comet Girls’ Water Polo Advances to Regional Championship

GL Girl’s Polo is Regional Championships Bound

The Grand Ledge Girl’s Water Polo team defeated Mason in thrilling fashion on Friday night, which in turn punched their ticket to Regionals for just the third time in the program’s history.

The Comets started out quick taking a 3-1 lead into the first quarter break with goals from seniors Liz Wood & Rachel Kisnonsky. Senior Taylor Kehren also added a goal in the second period which set up a 4-3 lead at the half. After weathering a storm of offense from Mason in the second half, the Comets found themselves down 8-6 with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Girls Water Polo v Troy 9After a missed shot from the Bulldogs, and a timeout play orchestrated by first year head coach Mitch Fountain, the Comets were able to put a goal up on the board with just under 20 seconds left. An all-out press forced the Bulldogs into a turnover and senior Liz Wood buried the equalizer in the back of the net with just 5 seconds remaining. The Comets took their momentum and ran with it in overtime, at one point scoring six unanswered goals, and the final became a 12-10 win. Senior goalkeeper Taylor McCrackin also had 10 saves in the OT victory.

The Girl’s team was back in the pool Saturday with two more games to play – each for seeding purposes for the Regional Tournament set for this upcoming weekend. In the first contest against Birmingham Seaholm, the Comets couldn’t quite overcome the quick start the Maple’s had, dropping a close game 7-6.

That set up for a slug-fest against Birmingham Groves in the third-place game at Districts, which the Comets won 14-10, and tied a school record for highest finish at Districts at 3rd.
