The Comets were coming off a successful regular season after finishing 2nd in the highly competitive CAAC Blue division and as runners-up in the CAAC Gold Cup. Though injuries had depleted the line up, the team entered their district semifinal match with a quiet confidence.

Early in the game, the Comets had to adjust to the field fast pace of the game and the physicality of the Rockford team. Though play was primarily in the Comets half, the team stayed organized and minimized the risk of Rockford scoring. Halfway through the first half, a free kick from Cassidy Pettinger (’19) was deflected off a Rockford defender and nearly went over the head of their goalkeeper.

Though Rockford put a lot of pressure on the defense late in the first half, the game entered halftime tied 0-0.

The second half saw much of the same effort from the Comets. However, midway though the half, Ashley Siwek (’18) pressed the Rockford defense and forced them into a turnover deep in their own end. Avery Seling (’20) was able to intercept a pass and hit a shot on goal, but her effort was saved.

With only 8 minutes to go in the game, a scramble in the penalty box resulted in a Rockford goal.

The Comets committed players forward, but were unable to find the equalizer and dropped the game 1-0.
