The 7th grade basketball team opened their season on Monday with games at Holt. Both A and B teams fought hard, but lost to a very tough Holt squad.

The A team lost a back and forth matchup 56-53. The Comets lead at the break 33-27, but a strong 3rd quarter by Holt put them in the lead they would never relinquish. Isaiah Bailey led Hayes with 20 points and Thomas Kerrigan chipped in with 9 points.

The B team also lost a difficult game. Justin Odlum scored 8 points and Cade Tackett added 6. The team struggled in the first half with turnovers, but played a much more solid 2nd half.

“I thought both teams displayed some first game jitters. Going on the road against a quality opponent in your 1st middle school game ever can be very difficult,” said coach Brett McCartney. “We will learn a lot from these games and I think the boys will be much improved the next time we play.”

The 7th grade is back in action on Monday, November 14th at DeWitt Middle School. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
