On Saturday October 15th, Grand Ledge hosted the 27th annual Greater Lansing Cross Country Meet. The meet started in 1989 with legendary Grand Ledge coaches coaches Carl Chapman and Jim Brandt. They originally chose the invitees based on which towns received the Lansing State Journal. To maintain the tradition, any team that is in the meet keeps their spot for the following year, and there is a waiting list to get in if a team decides to drop the meet.
This year Corunna won the meet with a score of 71, and their front man Noah Jacobs taking 1st place with a time of 15:23. Grand Ledge improved from last year by finishing in 6th place out of the 40 teams there. Our final score was 254. Christian Hubaker and Tyler McCartney both received medals by finishing 5th and 8th respectively.
“Seniors and captains Christian Hubaker and Tyler McCartney could control their race since we were on the far outside box,” coach Anthony Machniak said. “his allowed them to run their race without getting boxed in at the start.”
Sophomore Brad King was able to find that bit of inspiration to hang on and found a huge 35 second PR. “Whether it was to help out his teammates or to stay on the varsity squad, Brad’s newfound source of strength allowed him to step up into a scoring position,” Machniak said.
“Thank you to all who help make this meet possible, especially Kim Spalsbury (former coach), Jim Brandt (former coach), Don Yuvon (former teacher), Tim Marsh, Harold Weeks and Scott Kelley (owners of Ledge Meadows), Chuck Block (timer), Steve Baker (athletic director), Playmakers, and all of the teams who return year after year,” Machniak said.
