Early in the match, both teams tried to establish possession in the midfield. However, set pieces would tell the tale. In the 10th minute, Blaine Teahan (’17) was called into action as Jackson’s corner kick was headed down towards the goal. Blaine was quick to the task and made a diving save to his left before Erik Seelman (’17) was able to clear the danger.
In the 25th minute, the Comets came close on their own corner kick. Nick Myszak served a ball that was volleyed by Hudson Morgan (’18). Hudson’s attempt struck the bottle of the crossbar and came straight down before being gathered by the Jackson goalkeeper.
In the 29th minute, Erik Seelman struck home a beauty of a free kick. Erik stood over the ball in the center of the field, 25 yards out. His right footed effort curled around the wall and found the top right corner of the goal. It was Erik’s 5th goal of the season and second consecutive game that he scored directly from a free kick.
The game entered halftime 1-0 with the Comets leading.
The 2nd half started much the same way with both teams working hard to keep possession.
With only 8 minutes remaining in the game, Jackson’s Jon Kraeter got free in the midfield and he smashed his shot against the post, off Blaine’s head and safely into Blaine’s hands.
The Comet defense held strong and kept the 1-0 scoreline in tact. It was Blaine’s 10th shutout of the season surpassing his total of nine last year.
Grand Ledge advances to play East Lansing on Thursday, October 6 at 5pm at Boughton Field. The teams played to a 0-0 draw in the regular season. This is a rematch of the Gold Cup Final from a year ago. The Comets dropped that game 2-1 with the Comet’s lone goal coming from Hudson Morgan.
