Grand Ledge rallied from a late deficit to claim their third straight Dean Shippey Capital Diamond Classic Championship Championship, beating Holt 7-3 at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Grand Ledge trailed 3-0 before scrapping out two runs in the sixth inning to cut the gap to one run. A huge defensive play from third baseman Coopoer Alspaugh fired up the Comets and the momentum carried into the top half of the 7th inning. Cam Collins led off the pivotal final frame with a sharp single to right. He and Brendan Baker would score after an Holt error to give the Comets the lead 4-3.
Xavier Farr, Wyatt Rush and Alspaugh all came through with run scoring hits to push the Comets 7th inning cushion to 7-3.
Baker slammed the door on the Rams in the bottom of the seventh, finishing off a relief performance that saw the senior hold Holt scoreless over 3 2/3 innings. Baker was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
The Diamond Classic win was the 26th for Grand Ledge and the 24th for long-time coach Pat O’Keefe.
